Freiburg scored late on in the second half reducing the deficit to 3-2.

Leverkusen dominated possession and the game apparently. Freiberg didn't have a shot 2nd half according to reports so the score line is a tad generous to them possibly.

I noticed that yesterday our next opponents, Leverkusen, went to Freiburg and won 3-2.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sc Freiburg - Official Match Thread 5-0 (5-1agg)
I think Willtell or someone said that if Moyes could let Steidten help him that would be progress. In other words, let Steidten handle recruitment and bring in the players that are needed to build a formidable squad and Moyes accept being a modern day coach. If u look at this season and recent games its really the Steidten picks that have excelled. Sure Bowen and Antonio have been important too but there a list of Moyes recruits that dont look up to it longer term. Phillips, JWP, Aguerd, Zouma, Soucek and Coufal even Antonio need replacing in the first 11 if we want to build squad and better team around Paqueta, Bowen, Kudus, Areola, Alvarez, Emerson? Doesnt mean u get rid of them all butvl they become squad players some of them ?

But that gets back to the footballing philosophy and Moyes psychology or need for complete control.

He does not want to be a coach under a DOF and wants to pick players or veto those that dont fit he’s default philosophy. You HAVE TO have him aligned with Steidten. But if he woke up he might see Steidten getting players in would likely lead to him being more successful and allow him to risk playing a more attacking and possession based style?

But the only evidence we have is Moyes being obdurate, stubborn and resistant to change.

So the whole debate then really comes down to whether you think Steidten OR Moyes are better for the longer term progression of the club because they cant work together ?

Completely Agree Micky Rat and Sir Alf,

Some of those for and against are just as bad as each other but there is no room for the middle ground or any sensible and meaningful debate or for anyone to be neither strongly for or against but give a hint of being one side and you get shouted at.

It was a great result and a great night and I hope it continues against Leverkusen.

I'm with you Sir Alf, not too surprising as I'm a fellow old git! the polarisation and culture wars on this site (and country) really piss me off! Football's all about having different opinions but just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean they're a c**t.
Last night was fantastic, up there with the Seville home game, I have issues with Moyes negative tactics but love being in Europe 3 years on the trott

Better = develop the squad, develop the players and use our youth prospects to improve the squad...

I dont trust Moyea to be able to do that based on what Ive seen to date..

Better than what?

On average he’s done what’s been asked of him in the comparable budget. You get fluctuations around the mean but he’s mostly done a good average job.

Of course it would be great doing better than the average but you’ll always return to the mean.

Stop asking who can progress us. The simple answer is just about any of the many managers who have been mentioned could.. but do.you honestly think that if you give Moyes the budget for next season he would be able to progress our squad given the state of our squad : old, small and slow he has no history of improving the squad or the players...

The point is we dont trust him to make us any better..

Right the perspective for me is....our manager had two games earlier in the season to really get the job done on these. Instead in the first leg he took a defeat....there was no need... we are the much better team and we knew about them. The second leg we did what we should have done in the first leg. We are not talking they had something about them, we are talking we had better going right through the team.....so now we finally get to play a German team that if it puts it's 1st team out will give us a very hard time.

RM10 as you correctly point out . Kudus would have been taken out in the premier League. But it proves the point we are a side perfectly suited to European football. The slower tempo suits us and they struggle massively against Antonio they ain't used to players like him . He needs wrapping in cotton wool between now and Leverkusen.

I really must learn not to come on here after a good victory like last night. i read all the depressing and toxic crap that gets written and begin to believe that people on WHO are actually better judges than me, Which of course not the case:) Of course, they are entitled to their opinion but that is all it is an opinion even when it is dressed up with abusive infectives.

A while back now I decided to live in the moment and last night we were very good against a not-very-good side. In my opinion, we scored four good goals plus the brilliant one from Kudos. The Manager got in right from the beginning to the end, particularly with going with Antonio who again in my opinion was very good in the first half and always provided a good outlet ( which by the way is not hoof ball ) His running down channels is not as good as years gone by but is still very effective.

At (in) the moment I am a Happy Hammer

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sc Freiburg - Official Match Thread 5-0 (5-1agg)
Moyes in vs Moyes out like Brexit and other opinions etc. as far as I can see, seems to be about individuals making it all about them. The priority becomes elevating oneself above another in terms of football knowledge or whatever. Often achieved via attempts at personal insults and trolling to put down the persom who doesnt share the same opinion. That is just another way to elevate themselves.

Now it can be very amusing for the onlooker but really points to low self esteem and insecurity to get wound up by comments on a faceless forum ? Its “none of my business what someone thinks of me” is an old saying that seems pertinent.

Its not binary. I personally want Moyes to move on to progress further but acknowledge he has been a good stepping stone. Tbh if he wins the Europa or we qualify for Europe again via the leqgue its hard to say he shouldnt get a renewal even if the footballing philosophy is prehistoric :-)

I dont think it will happen but being either end of the debate , you are alliowed to have those views and it doesnt mean people cant have opposite opinions. The attempts shut down viewpoints are as mentioned, classic signs of insecurity, low self esteem and inadequacy.

We’re better than that? U cvnts !

Think we are just being realistic given Moyes's history of only playing ike this when his backs against the wall....

We are not getting carried away like we were told not to when Arsenal beat us 6 nil at home... its just a blip!

Why is everyone intent on being so negative about such a positive result?

We all know what the problem is. Consistency and Moyes being more flexible to new ideas.

Doesn’t make him a terrible manager but not the best perhaps WH fans would hope for.

Enjoy the good times we can’t win every game and never will. Two major Q final legs to look forward to and maybe another European finishing spot in the Prem.

Smile.

It also helps when players pass and are clinical in front of goal. Kudas goal was great to watch but he would have been taken out in the prem.

Freiburg are 8th in the bundesliga. And in the previous round put out lens who are currently 5th in the french league. Not saying there world beaters . They ain't but there hardly hopeless either. Truth is were a seriously good side especially offensively when Moyes releases the shackles. Which is why he's received so much stick from supporters myself included.

Clearly gonna be a Scouser v Hammers final then.

“If Liverpool come through their tie, they will face either Benfica or Marseille in the semi-finals, with West Ham meeting AC Milan or Roma if they find a way past Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen.”
